(MINNEAPOLIS, MN) Hillcrest Development, alongside Planet Fitness and contractor Steiner Construction, celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the newest Planet Fitness in Northeast Minneapolis. The milestone kicked off a successful all-day grand opening, drawing community members eager to tour the facility, explore the state-of-the-art equipment and experience the gym’s welcoming environment.
The gym occupies a former industrial space where massive domes for stadiums were once fabricated, featuring soaring ceilings, abundant natural light, and an open layout that makes working out inviting for all fitness levels. The 19,500-square-foot club includes rows of cardio machines, strength training equipment, free weights, a spacious circuit training area and the Black Card Spa with HydroMassage chairs and other relaxation amenities, all within Planet Fitness’s signature Judgement Free Zone®. The combination of expansive space, bright design and high ceilings makes this location uniquely suited to the neighborhood’s vibrant, creative energy.
“Northeast Minneapolis and the Marcy Holmes/University of Minnesota areas have had such great momentum and growth, but we saw a real need for accessible fitness in this part of the city,” said Alex Majkrzak, Vice President of Operations at Baseline Fitness, which manages more than 120 Planet Fitness locations, including 37 in Minnesota. “We’re excited to introduce Planet Fitness here and give the community an affordable, welcoming place to focus on health and wellness.”
The arrival of Planet Fitness continues Hillcrest Development’s long history of transforming 9th Street Center, a nine-building complex originally constructed between 1910 and the 1950s. Purchased by Hillcrest in the late 1990s when occupancy was below 50%, the property is now nearly fully leased and home to a dynamic mix of tenants, including Minneapolis Cider Co, MinnPost and CURiO (Thymes). Steiner Construction played a key role as the general contractor, helping convert the historic industrial space into a modern fitness hub.
“The arrival of Planet Fitness builds on the energy already happening at 9th Street Center,” said Scott M. Tankenoff, Managing Partner at Hillcrest. “Every new service adds to the neighborhood’s vitality, making it not just a place people want to visit, but a place they want to live, work and invest their future in.”
Planet Fitness at 9th Street Center is open and welcoming new members. Memberships start at $20/month. Book a tour or sign up today at planetfitness.com
