RJ Schinner, a distribution company with locations across the U.S., is expanding its footprint in the southeast metro area with plans to eventually bring more than 200,000 square feet of new industrial space to Cottage Grove.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based company, working with Opus Development, wants to build a 126,000-square-foot industrial building at 7550 91st St. S., part of the Southeast Industrial Park. The 12.66-acre site also includes room for a future 78,800-square-foot building.

An existing rail spur is on the east side of the property. The site is also accessible from Hemingway Avenue, 91st Street, and 91st Street Alcove, a roadway maintained by the property owner, according to a city staff report.

Last week, the Cottage Grove City Council granted plat and site plan approvals for the project. An RJ Schinner representative told the council that the first building could be finished by the end of the year.

The development would bring about 20 to 25 e mployees to the site, but that could grow to up to 35, said Mike Wentland, senior vice president of operations at RJ Schinner, which provides distribution services for food service wholesalers, paper wholesalers and others.
